CRACK THE CODE - March 9, 2007
Sneaky Ted
Once again it’s time for Hockey Spy.com to crack the code. This week we look at some of the comments concerning the accusation that Players Association leader Ted Saskin has been eavesdropping on player and agent emails.
Leafs defenceman Bryan McCabe said he wasn't bothered by the news.
"I haven't seen anything or read the paper," he said. "I've really got more important things on my mind. The summer's the time to deal with that stuff. I don't get too bothered with it right now."
Hockey Spy.com translation: “After getting booed by my own fans last week, I haven’t been reading any newspapers. Ted can do whatever he wants in the winter. I’m too busy counting my money after scamming the Leafs into overpaying me big time.”
Former Boston Bruins forward Sean McEachern, who started work as an assistant coach with Northeastern University this year, said he wouldn't be surprised if allegations of email monitoring are true.
"It makes sense to me," McEachern said. "I remember last year getting a call from Ted out of the blue. I had never spoken to him in my life, but I'd just sent an email to people like Trent Klatt who were challenging his hiring. I was wondering, `Why is he calling me?'"
Hockey Spy.com translation: “That explains a lot. When Ted called me out of the blue I thought that maybe he was gay.”
Several legal experts said it was unclear whether players affected by the alleged privacy breach would have grounds to file civil lawsuits against Saskin, Kim and the union.
"Unfortunately for the players, under Canadian law there is no direct claim for an invasion of privacy in most provinces," said Avner Levin, a business professor at Ryerson University who specializes in privacy issues.
Hockey Spy.com translation: “It’s a scumbag move, but we can’t do anything about it. The players will have to fire his ass.”
"Unions are supposed to be about promoting democracy and responsibility and full disclosure," Buzz Hargrove, national president of the Canadian Auto Workers, said yesterday. "I've followed what's happened in the corporate world with things like this, but you don't expect it in a union. This is incredibly shocking if it's true."
Hockey Spy.com translation: “The auto business is going into the tank. Maybe I can get Saskin’s job.”
