Billy Bob Kocur

Former Detroit Red Wing enforcer Joey Kocur is upset with the new style of hockey being played in the NHL. Like most unskilled brawlers he has no interest in seeing the skilled side of the game. Don’t take my word for it. Take a look at what Kocur was quoted as saying to Saginaw writer Chris Marchand:

"I don’t like it," Kocur said. "I don’t like that they’ve taken the toughness out of the game. There’s no accountability on the ice anymore. For some reason, they feel that fighting shouldn’t be part of a nationally televised sport. That’s their choice.”

Hockey Spy.com translation: “I don’t like the fact that they’ve take all the cement heads out of the game. There is no clumsiness on the ice anymore. For some reason, they feel that splitting someone’s face open shouldn’t be part of a nationally televised sport.”

"Everyone goes to NASCAR races to watch the crashes. They go to hockey games to watch the fighting. They’ve taken that away and attendance is down. I think a lot of people are disappointed in the style of the game."

Hockey Spy.com translation: “Everyone goes to NASCAR to watch the crashes, so I want to be called Billy Bob Kocur from now on. They’ve taken away all the muggings and attendance is down. It has nothing to do with ticket prices going through the roof. I think a lot of people are disappointed in all that skill in the game. I know I am and Tiger Williams is too.”

"My first coach in junior hockey told me that, to make it in the NHL, you have to do something that you’re the best at," Kocur said. "I only had a few goals and I didn’t have a fight up to that point. He said either play tough or be a goal scorer. I had a couple fights and I enjoyed it and did well at it so it just kind of carried on."

Hockey Spy.com translation: “My first coach in junior hockey knew I sucked so he conned me into beating the crap out of people. I only had a few goals in 20 years because I could hardly skate. I had about 200 fights and I enjoyed beating the crap out of all those skilled guys, so I just kind of carried on.”

"I wish that I could have continued on (in coaching)," Kocur said. "But when we were let go with Detroit, I didn’t want to move any more so I decided to get into a new business (in the restaurant/tavern field)."

Hockey Spy.com translation: “I wish that I could have continued on in coaching, but once the league got rid of all the clutching and grabbing I had no idea what to tell the players. No one else would hire me so I decided to get into a business (restaurant/tavern) where there are lots of fights taking place. I encourage all my customers to get drunk and start swinging. Gary Bettman doesn’t know what he is missing.”
