Playoff Tradition

Hockey players are notorious for being extremely superstitious, and creatures of habit. Some are subtle and behind the scenes, while others are more obvious. None more so than the well established playoff beard.

Hockey Spy.com has learned that the NHL has decided to crack down on the shaggy look of many of these playoff beards. At a time of year when fan interest is the highest, the league wants to present a clean cut and positive image as much as possible.

The league thought it would be easier to enforce the new crackdown on what is and isn’t acceptable by getting superstar Sidney Crosby to play in this year’s all-star game while demonstrating what is acceptable as far as a hockey beard is concerned.

Facial hair will be allowed on the side of the face, but players can no longer wear a beard that provides 100% facial coverage. The new look was supposed to remain a secret, but our Spycam has once again come up with the evidence. We were able to get a shot of Crosby at the Pittsburgh airport only minutes after he had his new playoff style beard trimmed at the airport barber shop. It looks rather spiffy if I do say so myself.
