Running Scared
Every year the three major junior hockey leagues send their best “prospects” to the annual prospects game. It has been a tradition for both Don Cherry and Bobby Orr to handle the coaching duties for the two sides. They always get a big kick out of seeing each other again, and of course placing a small wager on the outcome of the event.
But this year things are different. Not because it’s time for a change. Oh sure, that’s what CHL Commissioner Dave Branch is going around saying. That’s because Branch doesn’t have the guts to tell the truth.
The reason Cherry in particular, and therefore Orr as well, is not participating this year is because the game is in Quebec. And as we all know Cherry has become a rather controversial figure in the province of Quebec. Primarily due to his comments about French hockey players, their propensity for wearing visors and their general style of play.
Game organizers are afraid that Cherry might get a negative reaction when introduced at the game. Imagine that. And where exactly is the harm in that happening? Cherry won’t care. He’s a big boy and would undoubtedly get a good chuckle out of it. Orr would undoubtedly become the fan favourite and have a good time using that against his good buddy Cherry. Fans would pick up on the light hearted response from the two and milk it all night long for what its worth. And then it would be over.
But the gutless leadership from the CHL is taking the politically correct route and telling us something we all know isn’t true. Which is par for the course for this money grubbing administration.
Dave Branch is right. It is time for a break. It’s time for a break from his phony leadership.
