Crosby Loves New Uniforms (ching, ching, ching)

Today the NHL held a news conference to unveil the new Reebok uniforms that will be used in the All-Star game this year, and by all NHL teams starting next year. League Commissioner Gary Bettman brought out Sidney Crosby to rave about how much he loves the new look. Does the fact that Crosby is already a paid spokesperson for Reebok make anyone think his endorsement is a little less than honest?

Toronto Star columnist Damien Cox hit the nail on the head when he said that this is nothing more than a cheap money grab by Reebok. All this talk about players skating faster because they are dryer is nonsense. Have you ever heard any NHL player complain about their hockey sweater? Does anyone actually think the players will go faster?

Is Reebok really paying Crosby his million dollar endorsement deal? Or are we? Once these new uniforms hit the market a lot of gullible fans will race out to buy them. Pretend hockey coaches around North America will insist that their team be among the first to showcase the new look, so they can look progressive and ahead of their opponents. The “me too” kind of mentality.

When you let people who don’t know a puck from a duck get involved with our game this is what you get. Don’t forget the original concept from Reebok was to have the players wear sweaters that would be totally tucked in. Thankfully the Players Association nixed that, once they got off the floor from laughing so hard.

Let’s hope this phony marketing campaign (don’t you love the fact Reebok is calling their new product a “uniform system”) lasts about as long as the Cooperall pants did. I can’t wait to see how this new uniform system makes players more mobile as Reebok claims. Guys like Donald Brashear and Hal Gill will look like ballerinas on ice when they get their new duds on.

The real outrage won’t hit until fans of the classic traditional uniforms see how Reebok massacres them and replaces them with swirls and stripes weaved in all kinds of directions. Rumours have it that all sweater logos will be reduced in size. I guess they were too heavy too. Once again the mighty dollar takes precedence over what is best for the game. And you wonder why attendance is down? I don’t.
