Keep the game flowing. Less whistles. More non-stop action. A hockey fans dream. Mix in the resulting fatigue amongst players, with some good old fashion confusion during line changes and voila…………more scoring chances and more goals.

How to achieve such sustained action? Simple. Eliminate rules that allow stoppages in play including:

  • Players cannot freeze the puck along the boards for a whistle at any time
  • Players cannot fall on the puck outside the crease for a whistle at any time
  • Pucks that go over the end glass and off the end mesh will remain in play
  • Goalies cannot freeze pucks for a whistle, similar to lacrosse
  • Teams that go offside must retreat to their own half of centre without the puck
  • Teams can only change lines on the fly

From that core list, a lot of tweaking is required. No need to get into the fine print right now. The bottom line is that only goals, pucks in the stands, penalties and icing infractions will result in a stoppage of play. The briefly tried hurry up face-off rule would return as well. Play would often go uninterrupted for 4 or 5 minutes. When a whistle is finally required, play would resume 20 seconds later.

Can it be done? In a heartbeat. Would it be entertaining? Totally. Can we expect to see it soon? No chance. Television commercials would be reduced. Can’t have that. An exciting game is important. But nowhere near as important as making money.

What the heck was I thinking anyway?
