Forget About Keon
Dave Keon is mad at the Toronto Maple Leafs. He won’t agree to let the team honour him and his sweater number in a ceremony at the Air Canada Centre. The fact that fans and media alike have bent over backwards in their attempts to lure him out of hiding has had no effect on how Keon handles this issue.
While it was people from the Harold Ballard era that were responsible for Keon not finishing his career in a Leaf sweater, it is the current regime that made the decision to honour sweater numbers, rather than retire them altogether. In other words the sweater is hung in the rafters, along with the name of the player being honoured. The only difference is that the number is still in service and is still be used by current players. No big deal. Unless you are Dave Keon.
He was bitter already. And word is that until the team agrees to completely retire his sweater he wants nothing to do with any kind of ceremony. Contrast that with the classy way Steve Yzerman handled himself in his sweater ceremony in Detroit. Yes its true that Detroit will retire Yzerman’s number 19 completely. But if they had followed the Leaf example and only honoured numbers, you can be sure that Yzerman would still have been there in body and spirit.
It’s time for the Toronto Maple Leafs to forget about Dave Keon. The team has done all it can to show Keon how much they appreciate his contribution to this storied franchise. If you listen to Keon long enough you would think he’s the only one who made such a contribution. So let’s move forward and let Dave has his way. No ceremony. As that old saying goes be careful what you wish for Dave.
