![]() J U N I O R S U R V E I L L A N C E - March 8, 2007![]() While most junior hockey fans are familiar with the Memorial Cup, not as many are aware of the newly created Larry Mavety Cup. Mavety has been a coach and/or GM in the OHL for almost 100 years. During this long tenure he has never won a single championship. That’s not easy to do, but somehow Larry has it down to a science. It takes a combination of lousy coaching skills and panic roster moves to continually come up short. With all junior teams having to replenish their rosters every 3 years (due to age limits) it would seem that the law of averages would have delivered at least one championship to Mavety. The fact that this hasn’t happened is more than enough reason to honour him with this new award. The format will be simple. The two worst teams in the OHL, WHL, and QMJHL will all come together to face off in a 6 team round robin tournament. Unlike the Memorial Cup the Mavety trophy will be awarded to the team that finishes last. Most likely the Mavety Cup winner will go 0-5 in the round robin, although it’s possible a 1-4 record could also be enough to take home the honours. In the event of a tie a shootout will take place. The team that misses the most penalty shots will be deemed the winner. A lousy goalie will be important for any team that has hopes of winning the award. Looking at the junior standings today the following teams are big time contenders for the Mavety Cup: WHL: Portland 34 points, Kelowna 47 points QMJHL: St. John 39 points, Rimouski 48 points OHL: Erie 33 points, Windsor 41 points There is still a chance a few of these teams may be bumped out of the tournament due to an unfortunate one or two game winning streak. For instance the OHL’s St. Mike’s Majors are only 2 points away from making the list. Based on their last game it appears they are going all out to do just that. Final score was Oshawa 13 St. Mike’s 3. Larry Mavety would have been proud.
