Another Red Flag for Junior Hockey

Junior hockey has once again shown it still lives in the stone age. While the rest of society has moved on, this major junior level of hockey still uses intimidation to keep their slave labour players in line. This level of hockey still maintains a double standard when it comes to how their players are treated.

This week we learned that the coach of the Saint John Sea Dogs decided he was going to shove his political beliefs down the throats of his players. And if any player wasn’t prepared to swallow his kool-aid, he would be cut from the team.

Because forward Dave Bouchard did not sign a flag that was being sent to the troops in Afghanistan, Sea Dogs coach Jacques Beaulieu sent the kid packing. To make himself look completely stupid Beaulieu went on to claim Bouchard wasn’t playing well anyway. A quick look at the stats sheet shows that Bouchard had the most goals on the team.

Even if Bouchard had taken his own political stance and refused to sign the flag, Beaulieu would have been wrong. But Bouchard claims his not signing was a simple mistake, and that he would have gladly signed it.

I’m sure Beaulieu thought he would end up looking like some kind of big national hero when he bragged to the media about shafting the kid. Later this week the QMJHL commissioner plans to rule on Beaulieu’s behaviour.

They should fire his ass. Plain and simple. This major junior hockey has a few good mentors who are there to give something back to the kids. But the majority of these coaches are just self-serving idiots, who are using these kids to further their own careers. If they have to step on a few faces along the way to do that then so be it.

It’s tough to come out and say that. But guys like Beaulieu make it a whole lot easier.

Send your story to hockspy@hotmail.com and we will pass them on to our readers in a future installment of Junior Hockey Surveillance.
